Generic Medications

In 2008-2009, some seizure medications will become generic. The drugs are Lamictal, Keppra, Trileptal, and Depakote. Talk to your doctor to see if generic is right for you.

FDA Approval of New and/or Generic Medications

1. 1/8/09: Sabril (Vigabatrin) for use as treatment in infantile seizures
2. 1/16/09: Banzel (rufinamide) for use as add on therapy for seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (LGS)
3. 4/30/09: First generic version of Topamax (topiramate)
4. 5/26/09: Vimpat (lacosamide): New anti-epilepsy medication for use as add on therapy for partial-onset seizures

New Guidelines

In April of 2009, the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) and the American Epilepsy Society (AES) has issued new guidelines for pregnancy in women that have epilepsy.

New Patient Assistance Program

5/22/09 Pfizer Inc. announced an innovative patient assistance program to help unemployed Americans and their families who have lost their health insurance to maintain access to all Pfizer medications, including epilepsy medications. For specific information call

NeuroPace Study Program

The Indiana University Epilepsy Program has just finished enrolling patients for the NeuroPace (brain stimulation) study for those persons having medically refractory epilepsy. For more information, click onto the Research Projects tab.

Educational In-Service Programs

During the 2007-2008 fiscal year, the Indiana University Epilepsy Program conducted approximately 130 educational in-services. Click onto the In-Service Request Form to find out how your agency or business can receive a free in-service and for other educational in-service options.


In 2008, Dr. Omkar N. Markand was a finalist for the Hoosier Health Care Award. He was nominated by Clarian Health Partners for his work in the field of Epilepsy.


In 2009, Dr. Omkar N. Markand was the recipient for the Herbert H. Jasper Award. This international award recognizes an individual who has made a lifetime of outstanding contributions to the field of Clinical Neurophysiology.
