The
Indiana University Comprehensive Epilepsy Center was approached in April 2006 by the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA)
to consolidate the epilepsy education and support services with the
Indiana University Comprehensive Epilepsy Center. A combined meeting of
the group from FSSA and the Indiana University Department of Neurology was
held on June 6, 2006. After discussion, it was decided the Comprehensive
Epilepsy Center of Indiana University Department of Neurology, in addition
to providing state-of-the-art medical and surgical treatments to patients
afflicted with epilepsy, will take over all educational and support
services in Indiana beginning July 1, 2006.
-
"Basics of
Epilepsy" workshops: The classes, which last approximately two hours, are for direct support
staff, case managers, QMRP's, employment specialists, school nurses, and
others who work with and provide support services to those with
epilepsy. Details are available on the
left menu under "Professional Training." Please call your Indiana
Epilepsy educator for details or call toll-free at 800-210-7123. The workshops are
free but pre-registration is required.
- SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION AVAILABLE!
Are you a student with epilepsy who plans to attend college or graduate
school next year? Are you the caregiver of someone with epilepsy who
wishes to continue your own education? If so, please look at the
KEPPRA FAMILY EPILEPSY SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM to see if you might
qualify for a scholarship from UCB Pharma, Inc. Ten $5,000 scholarships
will be awarded to patients with epilepsy and five $5,000 scholarships
will be awarded to caregivers and/or family members. Visit UCB's website
at www.Keppra.com for more
information.
- Do you need help
obtaining prescription medications? "Rx for Indiana" has just celebrated
its first year! The program offers a Web site and a toll-free
call center that links eligible residents with pharmaceutical assistance
programs that provide free or discounted prescription drugs. The project
is an effort of the State and nearly 60 state and local agencies,
including Indiana Epilepsy Services. The service is free and completely
confidential. For more information, log on to the Web site for Rx
for Indiana or call the call center toll-free at
1-877-793-0765. Be prepared to answer a few short questions about your
age, income, medications, family size and any insurance coverage you
currently have. Patients, health care providers, or family members can
then quickly and easily find out which programs they qualify for and how
to apply for them. By the one-year anniversary of the project in
Indiana, more than 117,000 people had been matched with prescription
assistance programs.
- The Equal Employment Opportunity
Commission published a fact sheet to address workplace rights of
people with epilepsy under the Americans with Disabilities Act. The fact
sheet discusses when epilepsy is defined as a "disability" under the ADA;
when employers may (and may not) ask applicants and employees about their
epilepsy; what reasonable accommodations might be necessary, most of which
involve no cost; and how employers should deal with safety concerns that
they may have about employees with epilepsy. Please check out the
EEOC
website for more information, or call your local
Indiana Epilepsy Services consultant.
