1. “Basics of Epilepsy”
Approximately ten percent of individuals with developmental disabilities also have a seizure disorder called epilepsy.
We can help.
Indiana Epilepsy Program of the
Indiana University Comprehensive Epilepsy Center is supported by a grant funded through the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration, Division of Disability and Rehabilitative Services, to provide education and support to those with epilepsy, their families, professionals, and the community. Our training workshops are designed to provide a better understanding of seizure disorders and appropriate first aid, to help insure that individuals with epilepsy are cared for in a comfortable, secure environment.
Training Goal:
This training will help direct care staff to understand more about epilepsy, identify different types of seizures, and learn why it is important to follow a care plan for each individual. National guidelines for seizure first aid will be shared.
Audience:
Professionals of state institutions, Residential Services and Day Services
health care staff; developmental disability nurses; case managers; employment specialists; Vocational Rehabilitation staff; school nurses, and others who wish to know more about seizures
Program content will include:
• Definitions of seizures and epilepsy • Incidence and prevalence within certain populations • Identification of causes of seizures • Classifications of seizures • Review of common seizures • First aid for seizures (national guidelines)
• Review of diagnostic tools • Brief review of treatment options
• Tips to help describe a seizure • Videotape clips of different seizure types • Seizure first aid wallet card and brochure, “Questions and Answers about Seizure Disorders”
Please call your epilepsy educator or the Epilepsy Foundation of Indiana (317)876-0600 or (800)210-7123 for more information on scheduling an in-service. You can also fill out the "Request Form For Free Epilepsy In-Service" to schedule an in-service.
Other educational services and workshops are also available which deal with more specific aspects of Epilepsy. These include:
2. "Epilepsy and Psychological Problems" (2 hours)
Tailored for psychiatrists, psychologists, counselors and therapists. This program emphasizes psychological/psychiatric problems in patients with Epilepsy, behavioral episodes in mentally compromised patients and non-epileptic events (pseudoseizures).
3. "Epilepsy and School" (1-2 hours)
Tailored for school teachers and personnel. This program deals with what the teachers need to know about Epilepsy, the impact on students, how to suspect epileptic seizures and what to do if a child has an epileptic seizure in the class.
4. "Mini Courses in Epilepsy" (3-4 hours)
Can be arranged for health care professionals (physicians, psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, psychologists) to address many different issues related to epilepsy. These include types of epileptic seizures, medical and surgical management of Epilepsy, psychosocial aspects of Epilepsy, women issues, status epilepticus, non-epileptic events (pseudoseizures), etc.
There is no charge for the training, but PRE-REGISTRATION IS MANDATORY.
