IUCEC Background

The Indiana University Comprehensive Epilepsy Center (IUCEC) has grown to be a major program within the Department of Neurology at the Indiana University School of Medicine. Along with support from the School of Medicine, the Epilepsy Center also receives funding from the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration, Division of Disability and Rehabilitative Services.

The IUCEC is a member of the National Association of Epilepsy Centers and is designated as a Level 4 Specialized Epilepsy Center, which is the highest designation available. This designation recognizes the IUCEC as a state-of-the-art Center which has neurodiagnostic monitoring technologies as well as a full range of medical, surgical, neuropsychological, and psychiatric treatment options. As a result of our outstanding services and programs, patients with epilepsy from Indiana as well as neighboring states are referred to this center for treatment.

  • Fellowships are offered for Neurologists who seek advanced specialized training in EEG and epilepsy

Team Approach

  • Clinic: Epilepsy patients are managed in the Epilepsy Clinic on Wednesdays by a group of Epileptologists, Psychiatrists, EEG/Epilepsy fellows, social workers, nurses, and epilepsy educators
  • Presurgical Conference: Conducted on Mondays where patients who are considered for surgical treatment are discussed by Epileptologists, Neuropsychologists, Neurosurgeons, social workers, and EEG/Epilepsy fellows to be determined whether surgical treatment is a therapeutic option or not
  • Pseudoseizure Management: Patients are diagnosed as having pseudoseizures by Epileptologists utilizing video EEG monitoring. Then they are psychiatrically evaluated and managed by psychiatrists and social workers experienced in treating patients with pseudoseizures
